A new initiative has brought twelve solar streetlights to the Waikerekere multi-ethnic community in Lami, a project implemented by the NGO, The Art of Living Foundation. This enhancement is set to benefit over 600 residents in the region.

The initiative emerged from a community consultation program led by the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry. During the inauguration event, Rajesh Patel, a senior executive of the foundation, emphasized that the installation of the streetlights aims to improve the residents’ quality of life by providing more reliable lighting and promoting the use of renewable energy sources.

Mr. Patel noted that these solar lights will reduce the community’s carbon footprint while significantly improving safety at night. “The lights will not only illuminate the streets but will also bring joy, enabling safer movement and fostering a stronger sense of community,” he stated. He added that children will now have safer access to educational facilities and those commuting late will benefit as well. This endeavor aligns with a larger initiative to tackle critical infrastructure needs in underserved communities.

Maria Colati, president of the Waikerekere committee, highlighted the symbolic significance of the solar lights. She articulated that the installation stands as a testament to progress, sustainability, and the power of partnerships. “These lights will not only improve safety and security but will also encourage community involvement, empower our children to study after dark, and cultivate a sense of connection among residents,” Ms. Colati remarked.

She encapsulated the spirit of the project by saying, “As we stand under the glow of these new solar lights, may we be reminded of the power of collaboration and the brightness we can achieve when we come together as one.”

This project underscores how simple advancements in infrastructure can lead to meaningful improvements in community life, promoting safety and togetherness among residents.

In summary, the project represents a significant step towards enhancing infrastructure in the Waikerekere community, showcasing the impact of renewable energy solutions and community collaboration. It highlights a positive narrative of progress and hope, reflecting the collective efforts to build a safer and more connected community.
