EPC Solar, an Australian company, has entered into a collaboration with ONA Fiji to establish a coffee factory in Volivoli, Rakiraki, focused on utilizing renewable energy. ONA Fiji, which has its base in Canberra, aims to extend its operations into Fiji to engage with the burgeoning local coffee market.
Lucas Sena, the commercial manager of EPC Solar, highlighted that this initiative coincides with plans to open a branch in Rakiraki by June. The project will predominantly incorporate solar technology and battery systems, ensuring efficient energy management. Sena noted that the growth potential of Rakiraki, particularly with new resorts emerging in the region, presents a strategic opportunity for expansion.
Daryn Stocks, managing director of EPC Solar, shared that the investment, estimated at approximately AU$250,000 (around FJ$366,000), will also promote professional development by fusing local and Australian talent to improve renewable energy skills in Fiji. He stressed the goal of decreasing reliance on diesel generators, a common energy source in many islands, which would help reduce operational costs and lower carbon emissions.
Maheer Prasad, director of ONA Coffee, revealed that discussions about this venture began in 2023, and the factory’s location was chosen for its proximity to the wharf, facilitating effective processing and distribution. Prasad expressed enthusiasm about bringing Fiji’s first specialty coffee to market, with expectations of high export revenues that could reach AU$100 million by 2030.
This partnership underscores a commitment to EPC Solar’s strict renewable energy standards, essential for getting the project off the ground. The initiative aims to replace imported coffee with locally produced alternatives, aiding in the growth of domestic agriculture and reducing dependency on foreign products.
