Local solar solutions provider Electrify Energy Monkey (EEM) is forming a partnership with the Australian Government’s Market Development Facility (MDF) to promote the adoption of rooftop solar energy in Fiji. This collaboration aims to meet the increasing demand for solar energy from both residential and commercial sectors, acknowledging solar energy’s significant potential to aid Fiji in achieving its climate goals, specifically the objective of reducing carbon emissions by 30% by 2030.

Although Fiji has had a market for solar power for over 20 years, its current contribution to electricity generation remains relatively low. A study conducted in 2024 found that nearly 88% of urban households in Suva expressed willingness to invest in solar energy systems, and 50% showed interest in financing options like loans or subscription models.

However, the growth of the solar energy sector faces hurdles due to a lack of specific financial products and information regarding available solar options, which diminishes consumer and stakeholder confidence. EEM’s Managing Director, Pita Tamani, pointed out that with the region’s abundant sunlight, adopting rooftop solar could not only provide an eco-friendly energy source but also lead to cost savings and additional income for families.

MDF is committed to working alongside EEM to enhance awareness of solar energy products in Fiji, seeking to boost the use of solar installations and diminish reliance on fossil fuels. Kelera Cavuilati, MDF Fiji Country Director, emphasized the importance of this partnership in supporting the government’s priorities for reducing carbon emissions and promoting economically viable and environmentally friendly solutions.

Recent reports indicate a growing enthusiasm for solar energy among Fijians, suggesting a promising future for the renewable energy landscape in Fiji. By addressing informational gaps and expanding financing options, both EEM and MDF are paving the way for a sustainable energy transition that could significantly benefit households and businesses across the country. The positive momentum in Fiji’s renewable energy sector provides hope for a greener, more sustainable future.
