More than 900 households nationwide are poised to gain from a solar home system initiative outlined in the 2024-2025 national budget, a significant step towards enhancing energy access in remote areas. This $3 million project will benefit numerous households across several regions, including 93 in Bua, 91 in Macuata, 109 in Cakaudrove, 69 in Ra, 162 in Ba, and others in Kadavu, Lomaiviti, Nadroga, and Lau.
Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau announced that the government tender board has approved the contract necessary for this project. Equipment supply is anticipated to conclude by the end of July, with installation set to take place between August and December. This undertaking aims to provide efficient energy access, particularly benefiting households situated in the most remote localities.
“Energy is at the heart of development,” stated Ro Filipe Tuisawau. “It enables investments, innovations, and new industries that drive employment and shared prosperity.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to improving access to inclusive, reliable, and sustainable energy, particularly for rural and maritime communities.
In conjunction with the solar home system project, a maintenance initiative valued at another thousand dollars is also in progress. This will involve the distribution of 900 batteries to households across provinces like Lau, Kadavu, Yasawa, Beqa, Tailevu, and Naitasiri, further enhancing energy reliability in these areas.
This initiative aligns with Fiji’s broader strategies to bolster renewable energy usage, exemplified by earlier solar projects benefiting residential areas and schools, showcasing the government’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and improved living conditions. With each step forward, the hope is to create an energy landscape that fosters economic growth, quality education, and community development throughout Fiji. The ongoing investments in solar energy not only address energy demands but also empower local communities, paving the way for a greener and more prosperous future.
