The general secretary position for the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) will officially become vacant at the end of this month, the party has announced. The call for expressions of interest from qualified individuals for this crucial role comes at a time of increased scrutiny on the current general secretary, Viliame Takayawa, following a contentious social media post that has attracted criticism from members of the ruling coalition government.

Party leader Aseri Radrodro confirmed that a management board meeting would be convened soon to address the backlash surrounding Takayawa’s comments. This follows Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s suggestion that SODELPA’s standing within the coalition might be reevaluated if the party does not manage its internal discipline effectively.

While no direct link has been established between the social media controversy and the vacancy, the timing has drawn attention in political circles. SODELPA is looking for a candidate who will serve as the party’s administrative head and spokesperson, manage national campaign strategies, oversee party operations, and act as the Registered Officer as per Decree 4 of 2013. Applicants are expected to have the party’s best interests at heart and to commit fully to the responsibilities of the role, with applications closing on May 29, 2025.

The new general secretary’s compensation and working conditions will be determined by the SODELPA management board following the party’s constitution.

This situation mirrors past challenges faced by SODELPA, particularly regarding leadership and communication strategies. Historical friction within political factions emphasizes the critical need for unity and discipline—something that is vital for governance and coalition stability in the current political climate of Fiji.

On a hopeful note, this transition presents an opportunity for SODELPA to refine its internal processes and strengthen its ties with coalition partners. Fostering an environment of constructive dialogue and collaboration could pave the way for positive changes that benefit all Fijians as the 2026 elections approach.
