The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has reaffirmed its support for Viliame Gavoka as Deputy Prime Minister, despite his recent resignation as the party’s leader. In a statement, SODELPA General Secretary Viliame Takayawa clarified that the assignment of governmental roles rests with the Prime Minister, as outlined in the Coalition Agreement.

Takayawa expressed that it is fair for Gavoka to retain his position, given his role as party leader during the 2022 national elections. He emphasized SODELPA’s commitment to ensuring the coalition functions effectively, grounded in the principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity. The party’s constitution underpins its internal governance structure, providing clarity on the roles and responsibilities of both its party and parliamentary leaders.

SODELPA aims to collaborate with its coalition partners to promote national unity, advocate for indigenous rights, and foster a multicultural Fiji. Reflecting on the party’s essential role in forming the current government, Takayawa reiterated their dedication to honoring the mandate given to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

As Fiji approaches the 2026 elections, SODELPA is inviting all Fijians to join its mission for stability, progress, and unity. Takayawa asserted, “This is the leadership Fijians can trust – one that prioritizes the nation, seeks unity, and creates opportunities for every citizen.” This call for collective effort embodies a hopeful vision for a future that aligns with the aspirations of all Fijians.

The party’s ongoing support for Gavoka illustrates a strategy focused on coalition stability and constructive collaboration among partners. This approach fosters an environment conducive to significant advancements in governance, aiming for a united and prosperous Fiji. As SODELPA commits to inclusive policies that benefit all citizens, it underscores a hopeful outlook for the nation’s political landscape.

In summary, SODELPA’s reaffirmation of support for Gavoka highlights its dedication to effective governance and coalition unity, promising a bright future for Fiji that reflects the collective aspirations of its people.
