James Slipper, a prop for the Wallabies, has secured a one-year extension with the ACT Brumbies, setting him on track to become the most-capped player in Super Rugby history. At 35, Slipper is already the most capped Australian test player, with 143 test matches under his belt, and he aims to add to his impressive tally of 195 Super Rugby matches since his debut with the Queensland Reds in 2010. He needs just seven more appearances to surpass the current record held by Wyatt Crockett of the Canterbury Crusaders.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the continuation of his playing career, Slipper mentioned, “When there was an option on the table of playing another season for the Brumbies, I couldn’t say no. My body is still good and I feel the fittest that I have felt in a long time.” This speaks to the dedication and professionalism he brings to the team.
Brumbies head coach Stephen Larkham praised Slipper’s exceptional work ethic and leadership skills, noting that he has performed at a high level throughout the current season, making significant contributions in various aspects of the game, including set pieces and defense.
As the Brumbies gear up for their final match of the season against the Canterbury Crusaders, they aim to secure a top-two position and home advantage in the playoffs. Slipper’s versatility, allowing him to play effectively on both sides of the front row, positions him as a key player not only for the Brumbies but also in possible selections for the upcoming test series against the British & Irish Lions.
This extension not only highlights Slipper’s enduring talent and fitness but also reflects a broader commitment to building a strong team foundation for the future, blending experience with emerging talent as they prepare for next season. With optimism in the air and key players cementing their positions, the Brumbies are on a hopeful path toward continued success.
