Six years have passed, yet for Losalini Lalaia, time seems to have come to a standstill since the fateful day of Saturday, November 30, 2019, when her three-year-old daughter, Talei Raikadroka, disappeared without a trace in Kalekana Settlement, Lami. At 29, Ms. Lalaia remains haunted by the echoes of her daughter’s laughter, scanning every passing crowd and listening intently for the sounds of children, forever hoping that one day she might see her firstborn again.

“I try to be strong and hide my pain, but every dawn brings a relentless wait,” she revealed tearfully. “That was the worst Saturday of my life. It’s a day I will never forget.”

The tragic events unfolded after the family spent the night with relatives. Talei had chosen to cuddle next to her grandfather, with whom she shared a special bond. However, the following morning, the family awoke to find her missing. Despite thorough searches around their home and within the settlement, there was no sign of the young girl.

As her partner returned from fishing that day to the devastating news, the family promptly reported Talei’s disappearance to the police. Despite the passing years, Ms. Lalaia’s instinct remains unwavering; she clings to the belief that her daughter is alive and that one day she will return to her embrace.

Talei’s grandmother, Arieta Ronaiqato, also keeps the flame of hope alive. “She would have been a nine-year-old girl now. I miss her every day,” she expressed, wiping away tears. “When I see other children, I remind myself that one day I will see my granddaughter again. She was my pet.”

Last month, Ms. Ronaiqato visited the Criminal Investigations Department in Toorak, Suva, seeking updates on the missing person’s case. The officials assured her that investigations are ongoing and promised to reach out if any progress is made.

As they navigate through this heart-wrenching ordeal, the family continues to wait with unyielding patience, holding on to their faith and love, hoping that one day Talei will find her way home. In a recent statement, police spokesperson Ana Naisoro indicated that an update would be provided soon.

This enduring story serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of hope amidst despair, as families like Ms. Lalaia’s strive to hold onto the belief that their loved ones will one day return.
