Former Member of Parliament Simione Rasova is set to face court proceedings on corruption-related charges following a ruling delivered by Magistrate Joseph Daurewa. The ruling was made on behalf of Magistrate Pulekeria Low, who stated that there is sufficient evidence presented by the prosecution to proceed with the case against Rasova.
The court indicated that there are pertinent and admissible pieces of evidence that implicate Rasova concerning all aspects of the charges brought against him. The court also noted that Rasova’s identity was confirmed by multiple witnesses, thereby solidifying the case against him.
Central to the charges is the allegation that Rasova provided false information regarding his permanent address. He declared his residence as Nabouwalu Ono Kadavu, despite living at 208 Waimanu Rd, Suva. This misleading information is linked to two charges: one for Giving False Information to a Public Servant and another for Obtaining a Financial Advantage. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption claims that between July 1, 2019, and April 30, 2020, Rasova falsely declared his residence, which enabled him to secure $21,350 in parliamentary allowances unjustly.
Rasova is represented by lawyer Tomasi Tuitoga, and the next hearing for the case has been scheduled for the 24th of next month. The continuation of the legal proceedings underscores the commitment to accountability and integrity within public office, reinforcing the importance of transparency and ethical conduct among elected officials.
