The recent reassignment of Selina Kuruleca from the Education Ministry to the position of Permanent Secretary for Justice marks the beginning of further changes in government roles, according to Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman Luke Rokovada. In an interview conducted in Nadi, Rokovada stated that the reshuffle was essential, clarifying that it was not a result of performance issues or directives from the Prime Minister.
“The commission made the decision with the Prime Minister’s agreement,” he explained, emphasizing that all postings, appointments, or transfers for Permanent Secretaries are entrusted to the commission in collaboration with the Prime Minister.
Ratu Meli Nacuva has been appointed as Acting Permanent Secretary for Education while maintaining his responsibilities as Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports. Rokovada highlighted Nacuva’s background in public administration, education policy, and training, which will be advantageous in advancing the quality and accessibility of education.
Describing the changes as part of a routine reshuffle, Rokovada stated, “It’s just time for some of them to move around, enjoy a new environment, and contribute to their new organisations.” He noted that the position of PS Justice is newly established, and although they could not find the appropriate candidate through the advertising process, Kuruleca is deemed well-suited for the role.
Addressing concerns regarding Kuruleca’s experience in the justice sector, he assured, “The commission believes this new assignment will further leverage her skills and experience.” Additionally, he confirmed that an announcement regarding an Acting Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry would be made soon, following the resignation of Yogesh Karan.
