A man in his twenties has been taken into police custody after the alleged killing of his 86-year-old grandfather in Navokadamu Settlement, Lutu, Wainibuka. The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of July 12, 2025, when the suspect is accused of attacking his grandfather with a cane knife, resulting in serious injuries that led to the elderly man’s death.

Authorities received the report at the Vunidawa Police Station, and police inquiries are ongoing. This tragic incident is part of a concerning trend of violence affecting the elderly in communities, reflecting the need for increased awareness and protective measures for vulnerable populations.

Just last month, a similar case sparked discussions on the protection of seniors when a 25-year-old was charged with the murder of his 59-year-old grandmother, underlining the urgent necessity for community engagement in safeguarding our elderly. As investigations proceed, there is hope that this tragedy will encourage a stronger societal dialogue about protecting vulnerable members of our community and lead to preventative measures against such violence in the future.
