In 2022, British electrical engineering firm Utilligence won a contract to install domestic solar systems in Palau as part of an initiative with the Asian Development Bank. This venture offers government-supported low-interest loans, assisting residents in reducing their energy bills while managing affordable repayments for solar installations.

Palau Solar, a locally operated business in Koror, is staffed by a trained workforce specializing in renewable engineering. This local approach ensures cost-effective services and cultivates local job skills. To date, more than 400 solar installations have been completed, positioning Palau Solar as a leader in the Pacific’s renewable energy sector.

To build upon Palau Solar’s achievements and meet the rising regional demand for renewable energy, Pacific Island Renewables was launched to serve various Pacific Island communities. This new company takes advantage of the expertise from both Palau Solar and Utilligence in solar, wind, and smart grid technologies. It aims to establish itself as a regional center for engineering, procurement, and construction services related to renewable projects, emphasizing the importance of fostering local partnerships and advocating for workforce development. Such initiatives ensure that the benefits derived from renewable energy initiatives accrue to local communities, underpinning long-term sustainability and self-reliance.

In addition to residential projects, Palau Solar has ventured into commercial projects, which include a 4MW solar power system for a luxury hotel set to open in 2025 and systems for the local US military base. The company also provides consulting services to local governments to help shape effective renewable energy strategies tailored to the unique challenges faced by the islands.

Utilligence draws on its extensive experience in western grid integration to assist local operators in transitioning from diesel generators. Their aim is to integrate renewable energy solutions without compromising the integrity of local grid infrastructure.

This initiative highlights not just the necessity, but also the immense potential for renewable energy in the Pacific region, setting the stage for an energy future that is sustainable, economically beneficial, and resilient to the impacts of climate change. By taking proactive steps towards renewable energy adoption, Palau and surrounding nations can secure a cleaner power supply while bolstering local economies and fostering environmental responsibility.
