Yvo Alexander Van Dijk, the manager of Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort, has announced the launch of a global initiative called ‘Goodnight Moon’, aimed at raising funds for the UNICEF Foundation for Children while continuing their established local partnership with the Malolo Homes orphanage. This initiative is part of a broader effort being implemented across approximately 450 Sheraton hotels worldwide.
The ‘Goodnight Moon’ project involves creating a bedtime story for children, with contributions from readers around the globe. Mr. Dijk explained that the initiative will feature a donation drive where contributions made in Marriott Bonvoy points are matched by the Marriott corporation. For every dollar in points donated, Marriott will add an additional two dollars, ensuring that 100% of the contributions go directly to various children’s charities supported by UNICEF.
Additionally, the resort will accept cash donations in its lobby through a “wishing tree”, allowing both hotel guests and external visitors to contribute. Mr. Dijk highlighted that staying at the hotels enables guests to collect points, which can subsequently be donated to the UNICEF initiative. He personally donated 25,000 points, equivalent to $100, to illustrate the impact of this program.
Funds raised through this initiative will be channeled locally to support various NGOs. The Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort has been working closely with Malolo Homes, which has been an active partnership for three years, helping to provide for the needs of the 45 children at the home, including gifts during Christmas. Mr. Dijk praised the dedication of individuals involved in the orphanage, acknowledging the significant positive impact they have despite limited resources.
The resort is also organizing a customer donation drive for the Malolo Homes children to replicate last year’s success. Guests will have the opportunity to donate items based on a wish list provided by the children’s home, or contribute cash to purchase presents.
This initiative exemplifies the Sheraton’s commitment to community support and the welfare of children, showcasing how hospitality can play a vital role in charitable efforts. Through partnerships like these, both local and global communities are positively impacted, fostering a spirit of giving that resonates far beyond the Fiji Islands.
