The 2025 Pacific Update, a significant public policy and development conference, commenced yesterday at the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Suva, Fiji. Spanning from June 3 to 5, the event has attracted over 60 presentations from research experts across the Pacific regions including Australia and New Zealand.

This year’s program includes keynote speeches, plenary sessions, and panel discussions that address critical topics such as regional integration, governance, gender equality, and labor mobility. A mix of academics, policymakers, business leaders, civil society representatives, and interested members of the public are participating in the conference.

In his keynote address, Baron Waqa, the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, advocated for a unified Blue Pacific Continent and urged attendees to rethink conventional economic indicators. He emphasized the need for metrics that reflect resilience and quality of life, pushing for a shift towards Pacific-led frameworks that promote shared prosperity.

USP’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia, echoed a commitment to collaboration and continuity in discussions about developing a skilled, adaptive economy within the Pacific region. He noted the importance of fostering personal interconnections that emerge as participants gather year after year.

The ongoing dialogue at the conference promises to generate fresh perspectives and regional partnerships aimed at creating a more inclusive and empowered Pacific community. The discussions are especially relevant given recent global challenges, from climate change to socio-economic shifts, that require a collective response.

Both the current conference and similar past events, like the recent Pacific Labour Mobility Annual Meeting, stress the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing urgent challenges. As highlighted at both venues, building frameworks that enhance labor mobility and regional resilience could pave the way for positive developments across the Pacific islands.

The overall atmosphere at the Pacific Update is one of hope and determination, with a shared commitment towards shaping a brighter future for all Pacific nations.
