Over 2,200 students with disabilities are currently enrolled in both special and regular educational institutions. This significant statistic was shared by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro during the Special and Inclusive Education (SIE) Talanoa, AGM, Wellness, Awards (TAWA) Conference.

Mr. Radrodro emphasized the vital role that special and inclusive education plays in society and highlighted the crucial part educators play in shaping the futures of children with disabilities. He acknowledged the remarkable progress made in this area but also pointed out that there remains more work to be accomplished. The overarching goal is to ensure that every student, regardless of their individual abilities, has access to quality education.

He praised initiatives aimed at assisting students in transitioning to regular schools, piloting a new curriculum for Years 1-4, and increasing budget allocations for special and inclusive education. Mr. Radrodro took a moment to commend the unwavering dedication of special and inclusive educators who, despite facing numerous challenges, continue to show commitment and passion in their roles.

“While awards serve as appreciation tokens, the true impact of your contributions transcends trophies and certificates,” he said. He further encouraged educators to maintain their work with empathy, compassion, and a commitment to inclusivity.

The Minister also acknowledged the vital support from various development partners, particularly the Government of Australia, as well as local organizations such as the Fiji Disabled Persons Federation and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities.

This article sheds light on the ongoing commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for students with disabilities. The support and recognition of educators’ efforts not only validate their hard work but encourage a more inclusive environment for all learners. The future looks promising as efforts continue to ensure equity in education for everyone.
