Shangri-La Yanuca Island is taking significant strides to enhance its operations in response to the pressing challenge of climate change. General Manager Francis Lee highlighted that climate change poses a critical threat, particularly impacting those living in coastal areas.
In a commitment to sustainability, the hotel is actively working to reduce plastic usage and limit the importation of environmentally harmful items. Lee stated, “We honestly try our best to not to use or import outside things. For example, water, bottled water. We try to do away with single plastic use, bottled plastic and all this. We want to have our own water bottling plant, using local water from Fiji to sustain and to provide the best where we can.”
The efforts extend beyond reducing plastic; they include a focus on sourcing products locally and implementing the principles of Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle throughout the hotel’s operations. By prioritizing local sourcing and minimizing waste, Shangri-La Yanuca Island not only enhances its commitment to the environment but also supports the local economy.
These initiatives reflect a growing awareness and responsibility among businesses to contribute to the sustainability of their environments, offering a hopeful outlook for the future of tourism in vulnerable areas.
