Weather Alert from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi
Issued on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025 at 7:30 PM
Hold onto your hats, folks! A STRONG WIND WARNING is officially in effect for the land areas of Western and Southern Viti Levu, Yasawa, Mamanuca groups, Kadavu and its nearby islands, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups. It’s going to be a breezy evening, which means those wind-resistant hairstyles might just get their moment in the spotlight!
And let’s not forget about the HEAVY RAIN WARNING taking aim at parts of Western and Northern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, and well, just about every other island in the region – Yasawa, Mamanuca, Kadavu, Lau, and Lomaiviti. It’s like the rain clouds scheduled a group vacation over Fiji! For everyone else across the Fiji group, you’re still on the rain alert list.
Now, what’s causing this weather chaos? An active trough of low pressure packed with moisture and wind is sweeping across the islands, and it seems determined to stay through Tuesday, spreading the wetness eastward like it’s a free buffet!
Forecast until midnight tomorrow includes a strong northwest wind, blowing at 37 to 46 km/hr with gusts trying to break the sound barrier at up to 55 km/hr. Seas? Rough, like your uncle’s jokes at family reunions.
You can also expect rain to pop in and out, heavy at times, with hints of thunder serving as nature’s own light show, primarily over the Greater Nadi Area, Lautoka, Ba, and the interior of Bure… you get the picture. There’s a good chance of localized heavy falls leading to flash flooding in low-lying areas—so avoid those romantic strolls in the puddles!
Tomorrow, expect frequent and heavy rain with the minor chance of thunderstorms. Just remember: when it rains, it pours, and if you’re in a flood-prone area, maybe put off launching that new boat!
For specific forecasts in your area:
– Navua / Suva / Nausori: Stay on your toes for occasional rain and potential thunderstorms.
– Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: Strong winds and potential deluges! Don’t be surprised if your umbrella gives up during the storm.
– Yasawa / Mamanuca group: Think windy, rainy, a little bit of thunder, and a mild risk of smooth sailing into heavy puddles.
– Tavua / Rakiraki, and Labasa: More rain, more potential for fun rainy day activities! Bring out those raincoats!
– Savusavu: Don’t be deceived by the occasional sun peek; expect some thunderous surprises in the afternoon.
And for those in the splendor of Rotuma, it looks like the moist northerly winds will keep you cozy, only interrupted by brief showers.
While nature is throwing a temper tantrum, stay safe, dry, and keep your eyes on the skies! Let’s hope the sun makes an appearance soon enough!
