Weather Update

Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 7:30pm on Friday, February 14, 2025.

Attention all weather watchers! Grab your umbrellas, and maybe a kayak, because a HEAVY RAIN ALERT is currently doing its dance across the entire Fiji Group. Yes, you heard it right—Mother Nature is feeling quite generous with her rainfall, and it seems she’s not done yet.

Situation: A sluggish trough of low pressure, feeling a bit lazy, is hanging over the southern parts of Fiji, bringing along clouds and rain that may just insist on sticking around. This pesky trough is also revving up the northwesterly winds, bringing some occasional rain to keep us all on our toes.

Forecast until midnight tomorrow:
Kadavu, Moala Group, and the Southern Lau group can expect a show of occasional rain—heavy at times, accompanied by a few thunderstorms trying to steal the spotlight.

For the interior areas of Viti Levu (including Sigatoka through Navua, Suva, and all the way to Tailevu North), plus interior parts of Vanua Levu and the Southern Bua: Get ready for cloudy periods that will evolve into showers that plan to turn into rain, and later, frequent downpours possibly sprinkled with a few raucous thunderstorms.

The rest of Fiji? Oh, you won’t be left out! Expect occasional rain with some isolated heavy falls and the odd thunderstorm peeking through. Just a friendly reminder—localised heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in low-lying or flood-prone areas. So if you start seeing boats on the streets, you’ll know why!

Moderate northwesterly winds will sweep through, possibly gusting during heavy downpours, while moderate seas could get a little rough—we’re not looking at a calming sea so bring your life jackets.

Looking forward to Sunday:
The forecast keeps the rain trend alive with heavy periods and a few thunderstorms especially over Kadavu, the Western Division, and its interior. Elsewhere? You guessed it—occasional rain will continue to feature as a recurring character, heavy at times with some thunderstorms attempting to steal the scene.

Specific area outlooks for tomorrow:
– For Navua/Suva/Nausori: Cloudiness will make an appearance, followed by showers that will evolve into rain in the afternoon/evening accompanied by potential thunderstorms.
– For Nadi/Lautoka/Ba: Have your raincoats ready; it’ll be occasional rain with isolated heavy falls and a thunderstorm cameo.
– For Sigatoka/Coral Coast: Expect a cloudy period with some showers ramping up to rain and frequent appearances by the thunder!
– Tavua/Rakiraki, Yasawa/Mamanuca, Labasa and Savusavu: You guessed right, occasional rain with heavy falls and thunderstorms await you.
– Lau/Lomaiviti: A sprinkling of heavy rain and thunder for the southern Lau group, while the rest enjoy occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms.

In conclusion, everyone, prepare for a waterlogged Fijian adventure! Stay safe and keep your umbrellas handy. Who knows, maybe the sun will decide to join the party soon!
