Weather Update

Good morning, Fiji! Don’t forget your umbrellas, as we’ve got quite the soggy situation unfolding. The Heavy Rain Alert remains in place for the Northern Division and Yasawa Group. But cheer up! The Interior and Eastern parts of Viti Levu, along with Kadavu and some nearby islands, are getting a moment to dry off as their heavy rain alert has officially been nixed. The sun may even poke its head out for a moment or two – an attitude we strongly recommend adopting on those rainy days!

Now let’s talk about our adventurous flash flooding situation. For those living in small streams and low-lying areas throughout the Interior and Eastern side of Viti Levu, as well as parts of Vanua Levu, take heed! Those delightful afternoon showers can turn into excitement (or chaos) in a heartbeat.

Weather Forecasters are keeping an eye on a sluggish trough of low pressure hanging out just north of us. It’s creeping southward faster than the neighbor’s cat walking away with your fish at dinner. Expect occasional showers interspersed with isolated thunderstorms today, particularly over Cakaudrove Province, Southern Bua, and, of course, the Yasawa group.

As we head into the early afternoon, you can anticipate some electrifying thunder and heavy downpours that could easily cause your outdoor plans to be whisked away, much like that last slice of cake at a birthday party. The rest of the Northern Division could see showers ramping up to rain later, so stay alert!

For those residing in the Interior and Eastern half of Viti Levu, it’s looking mostly cloudy with a smattering of showers and perhaps a few grumpy thunderclaps this afternoon. But don’t be fooled! Just because it’s cloudy doesn’t mean you should skip your sunblock – the UV rays are still on the prowl!

In the mood for some light adventure? If you’re in Navua, Suva, or Nausori, you’ll want to keep an eye on the skies. Showers might hit with enough gusto to make you question your decisions regarding footwear.

Over on the Western front in Nadi, Lautoka, and Ba, expect that fine weather to take a brief afternoon siesta with an occasional rain shower crashing the party. But for your evening BBQs, things should remain relatively dry… unless outdoor activities are on the menu.

All this rain brings with it some strong convictions from our southeast winds, which could be freshening up to 50 km/h in the Northern Division. Please don’t let that keep you from enjoying some exhilarating (and safe) beach visits; just hold on to your hats!

For our friends in Rotuma, you’re facing some brisk northwesterly winds causing a bit of a ruckus. Stay tuned for heavy rain and perhaps a fierce thunderstorm or two. Just remember to secure your garden gnomes!

The weekend is shaping up with scattered thunderstorms, particularly over Northern Lau and the Yasawa Group, along with heavy rains. So grab your life jackets and enjoy floating your way through the weekend instead of walking!

Stay safe, keep your spirits high, and let’s hope for a little less drippy drama in the days to come!
