Weather Update: The Only Mistake is to Forget Your Umbrella!

Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre, Nadi, at 11:00 PM on the very tumultuous Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

Grab your galoshes and put on your raincoats, folks! A HEAVY RAIN ALERT is strutting its stuff across the interior and eastern half of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Kadavu, and those cheeky little islands nearby—Lau and Lomaiviti. This is not a drill; it’s the real wet deal!

But wait, there’s more! We’ve also got a FLASH FLOOD ALERT flashing like a neon sign for small streams and areas known to get a little too friendly with water. This includes spots from Korolevu, splashing through the Coral Coast, and dancing around Navua, Lami, Suva, all the way to Tavua and beyond. If you’re in these areas, think twice before channeling your inner duck!

What’s cooking in the weather pot? A sluggish trough of low pressure, like that relative who overstays their welcome, is bringing clouds and rain, and not the kind you can use to water your garden. It’s deciding to drift south over the northern parts of Fiji before returning to its original position tomorrow, like it’s just having a leisurely stroll. Meanwhile, a moist southeast to southwest wind is hanging around Fiji, probably waiting for the rain to clear up.

Now, what’s on the forecast menu until midnight Thursday, you ask? Here goes: Occasional rain (no shortage of that), heavy at times, accompanied by the delightful rumblings of thunderstorms. This feast will be most bountiful in the Northern Division, Yasawa, Lau, Lomaiviti group, and of course, the Interior and Eastern half of Viti Levu—yes, we’re looking at you Suva! Rain will simmer down to mere showers tomorrow, but not without leaving its mark.

Elsewhere, things will be a little more reasonable, with fine weather only interrupted by the usual joyous afternoon or evening showers—because what’s a day without that surprise sprinkle? Just a heads-up, severe thunderstorms will be making their grand entrance over western and interior parts of Viti Levu, perfect for that dramatic flourish in your day!

And now for the weekend outlook (cue the “Dramatic Music”):

– **Friday** – Expect cloudy periods and some showers with the possibility of isolated heavy falls in Cakaudrove, Southern Bua, Interior, and Eastern Viti Levu–especially from Sigatoka to Suva.

– Meanwhile, in the charming coastal towns of Nadi, Lautoka, and Ba, you’ll find fine weather, apart from perhaps the odd shower or thunderstorm trying to crash the party.

– For places like Tavua and Rakiraki, the sun might choose to shine, but be ready for uninvited showers later in the day.

– As for our friends at Yasawa/Mamanuca? Occasional rain with a sprinkle of heavy falls but don’t worry, the sun will peek through as well.

– Labasa and Savusavu, get your rain gear ready! The occasional downpour is headed your way.

– And for our isolated friends in Rotuma, a STRONG WIND WARNING is in effect, with wind speeds up to 50 km/hr, rain, and perhaps a thrilling thunderstorm or two!

So there you have it, folks! Prepare yourselves for weather that’s as dramatic as the best soap opera, and remember: when life gives you heavy rain, just add floaties!
