The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has established three evacuation centers in the Central Division to assist residents impacted by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. According to NDMO, affected families are being accommodated at St Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
As heavy rainfall has led to rising river levels and flooding, NDMO is advising those in flood-prone and low-lying areas within the Central Division to exercise caution. The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has been partially activated, and NDMO is collaborating with relevant authorities to assess the situation.
The intense rains have resulted in flooding in various towns and communities, disrupting minor roads and bridges. NDMO reported that some regions are facing landslides and traffic interruptions, urging the public in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel.
The organization emphasizes the importance of public safety during this time. Those needing assistance to reach higher ground are advised to contact the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority. NDMO also cautioned against attempting to cross or swim in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water levels exceed knee height.
This precaution is vital for ensuring personal safety and reducing risks for both the public and emergency responders. Floodwaters may contain pollutants, so the public is advised to avoid contact where possible. Additionally, there are health risks associated with heavy rain, including leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhea, that residents should be aware of.
