The upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, taking place from January 16 to 18, 2025, at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, is generating significant excitement, primarily because it may mark the last appearance of rugby legends Jerry Tuwai and Rosko Specman on the sevens rugby stage. Both players will represent the Mike Friday Select 7s team, making this event a highly anticipated occasion for fans.
Jerry Tuwai, celebrated for his extraordinary skills and leadership, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and former World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year. Recently, he added a silver medal to his accolades at the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024. Tuwai is not only a skilled athlete but also a symbol of Fijian rugby, embodying faith, humility, and flair.
In contrast, Rosko Specman, affectionately dubbed “Specmagic” due to his remarkable speed and agility, played a crucial role in South Africa’s success during the 2017/2018 HSBC World Series. He has since transitioned smoothly into 15s rugby with the Cheetahs in the Pro 14 league and earned bronze medals at both the Rio (2016) and Paris (2024) Olympics.
This tournament is historic as it will be the first time Tuwai and Specman will play together on the same team after years of competing against each other. The Mike Friday Select 7s team also includes other notable players such as former Irish 7s captain Harry McNulty and American standout Matai Leuta, along with talented Fijian players like Lasaro Bogisa and Iowane Teba.
The Coral Coast 7s is set to host a total of 44 teams, including 16 men’s teams, 16 youth teams, and 12 women’s teams. This diverse lineup promises thrilling matches that will showcase both local talent and international prowess. With free admission, the tournament aims to foster community spirit, inviting fans from all walks of life to unite in their love of rugby.
As the anticipation builds for this monumental event, it stands as not only a farewell to Tuwai and Specman but also an opportunity to inspire the next generation of rugby athletes. The Coral Coast 7s promises to be a vibrant celebration of rugby, reflecting the sport’s significance within Fijian culture and ensuring that the passion for rugby continues to thrive.
