Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu delivered an inspiring message on true leadership to student leaders at the prefect induction ceremony held at Nabua Secondary School on Friday. She emphasized that effective leadership is founded on service, responsibility, and compassion rather than merely possessing a title.
Bainivalu encouraged the newly-appointed leaders to view their roles not as a display of authority but as a serious commitment to uplift their peers and community. “To lead is not to be above your peers, but to stand with the one who carries the heaviest load,” she stated, highlighting the importance of empathy and action in leadership.
The minister praised Nabua Secondary School’s commitment to inclusivity, noting its student body of 535 and the additional support provided through an adult learning program for 210 learners. This initiative reflects the school’s dedication to ensuring educational opportunities are accessible to all.
Bainivalu pointed out that the essence of leadership transcends the classroom and should be evident in consistency of character and conduct. She also called on students to respect and embrace their cultural identities, particularly in an era of rapid global change, emphasizing that tradition serves as a vital anchor for communities.
In closing, she reminded the student leaders that the decisions they make today will play a critical role in shaping the future of Fiji. This message resonates with the idea that leadership is not only about authority but about the positive and impactful choices that can foster growth and unity within society.
