Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has publicly stated that his upcoming political party will steer clear of connections with Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and other former leaders of the recently deregistered FijiFirst party. In response to allegations that Sayed-Khaiyum played a role in the establishment of the new People First Party, Seruiratu categorically denied these claims.
He emphasized that the new party represents a complete break from past affiliations, saying, “We have broken clean from that arrangement when we were deregistered, and they are not part of our party. If they form another party that is beyond us.” His comments underline a deliberate effort to create a distinct brand and political identity separate from the previous leadership.
Seruiratu also confirmed that the People First Party will not be accepting applications from former leaders associated with FijiFirst, reinforcing a commitment to start anew. He expressed confidence that those former leaders would not seek to join the new party.
With these statements, Seruiratu is signaling a fresh political direction, aimed at attracting new supporters who are looking for an alternative to the established political figures of the past. This move may resonate with voters seeking change and a departure from previous governance models.
