May 1, 2026: Fiji Braces for Cloudy Skies with Showers, Isolated Afternoon Thunderstorms in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu Interiors; Southeast Winds and Rough Seas

Coastal view of Fiji with dark storm clouds and ocean waves crashing on the beach.

A southeast airstream will keep many northern, eastern and central islands cloudy with showers today, while much of the west and parts of the outer islands remain mainly fine. Moderate to fresh southeast winds will prevail across the group and seas will be moderate to rough.

Cloudy conditions with some showers are expected over Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Elsewhere, weather will be mostly fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers. Isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms are possible, particularly in the interior of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

Local forecasts: Navua, Suva and Nausori will be cloudy with some showers (Min 22°C, Max 31°C), with a similar outlook on Saturday. Natadradave and Korovou also expect cloudy skies with showers (Min 22°C, Max 31°C). The Yasawa and Mamanuca group should remain mainly fine apart from possible afternoon or evening showers (Min 23°C, Max 31°C). Sigatoka and the Coral Coast are expected to be largely fine but with the chance of afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms (Min 22°C, Max 31°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba are mainly fine with the risk of afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms (Min 22°C, Max 33°C). Tavua and Rakiraki, and Labasa, have similar conditions with daytime highs in the low 30s.

Marine and island notes: moderate to fresh southeast winds will continue with moderate to rough seas across the waters. Rotuma has a southeasterly flow with a trough just to the north; occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely there today, with moderate to fresh southeasterlies and moderate to rough seas (Min 24°C, Max 32°C), and a similar outlook on Saturday.

Practical points: coastal and marine users should take care given the moderate to rough seas and fresh southeast winds. Communities inland on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu should be prepared for the chance of isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms. The general pattern is for cloudy, showery conditions in the eastern and central island groups, while western areas remain comparatively drier.
