A relocation initiative is being implemented for communities in Serua that have been adversely affected by ongoing flooding, as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of persistent water damage and infrastructure challenges. Provincial Administrator Jona Dalaga emphasized that flooding along the Queens Highway in Serua poses a significant concern, with inadequate drainage contributing to repeated road damage and potential hazards for daily commuters.

The effort is integral to a larger government strategy aimed at addressing the enduring challenges faced by the community. Dalaga noted that while plans are underway to move residents from the vulnerable areas of Korovisilou, Talenauwa, and Vunaniu to more secure locations on higher ground, it is essential to first resolve the drainage issues that have plagued these regions.

“We are assessing flood-prone areas such as Korovisilou, Talenauwa, and Vunaniu for potential relocation to higher ground. However, the critical issue remains the ineffective drainage system. We are in discussions with the Government to find the most viable solutions,” he stated.

As part of this initiative, villagers who are contemplating the construction of new homes are being encouraged to select sites at higher elevations. Dalaga highlighted the need for ongoing consultations, stressing that relocation discussions should be approached with care, considering the strong traditional and cultural connections that communities have with their ancestral lands.

He acknowledged that the process may require considerable time and effort, as it is crucial for the communities to understand and accept the proposed changes in their living conditions. This proactive approach provides hope for residents facing the immediate threat of flooding while honoring their cultural heritage.
