A secret ballot is currently taking place at Nanuku Resort Fiji as union members deliberate on potential strike action amid a prolonged dispute over wages and working conditions. The Fiji Tourism Workers Union (FTWU) has been engaged in discussions with the resort’s management for two years, aiming to secure better employment conditions for its members.

Union consultant Salesh Naidu emphasized that the FTWU has consistently sought improvements in various areas, including a comprehensive log of claims encompassing terms and conditions of employment, a 10 percent wage increase for all union members, guarantees against reductions in working hours, and protections against unwarranted suspensions.

Despite ongoing negotiations, the management has failed to agree to the union’s essential demands. As tensions continue, the FTWU has decided to gauge its members’ support for possible strike action through the secret ballot, which is being conducted today, December 22, 2025, starting at 6:00 am at the resort.

The outcome of this ballot could significantly impact the future relationship between the union and management, as both sides navigate this crucial crossroads in their discussions. The advocacy for workers’ rights reflects a growing trend among unions to ensure fair treatment and equitable compensation in the tourism industry, which has faced substantial challenges over the past few years.
