Samisoni Dauloloma, a 23-year-old seafarer, has been left seeking answers nearly two months after he lost half of his foot in a serious workplace accident aboard the Lomaiviti Princess 11. The incident occurred during a berthing procedure at Natovi Landing, where a malfunctioning hydraulic ramp suddenly dropped onto him. Despite wearing safety boots, the injuries sustained were severe enough that doctors had no choice but to amputate Dauloloma’s foot.

Since being discharged from the hospital, Dauloloma has expressed frustration over the lack of communication from both his employer, Goundar Shipping Limited, and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF). He reported that neither he nor his family have received any updates regarding the investigation into the accident. “There has been no communication at all from the company to me or my family ever since it happened,” he lamented, which further highlights the need for better communication and support systems in workplace safety protocols.

Following the incident, MSAF confirmed an investigation is underway, which has raised concerns about the adherence to safety protocols aboard such vessels, particularly given the classification of the incident as preventable by MSAF’s chief executive, Joeli Cawaki. The ongoing investigation not only seeks to determine what went wrong but also emphasizes a broader issue regarding systemic safety measures within the maritime sector.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern that has emerged in recent months, showcasing a significant need for improved workplace safety in the maritime industry in Fiji, especially in light of prior incidents involving Goundar Shipping. Dauloloma’s injury, as well as previous serious accidents, serve as critical reminders of the vulnerabilities faced by maritime workers.

The hope remains that through this investigation and the ensuing scrutiny, meaningful changes will be enacted to enhance safety measures, ensuring the protection and well-being of workers in such hazardous settings. Advocates and family members of affected seafarers are calling for accountability from Goundar Shipping, urging the company to support its workers and improve safety standards within the industry. As the situation develops, it serves as a chance for reflection and progress toward a safer working environment for all maritime employees.
