Following a comprehensive assessment of the impact of Tropical Cyclone Rae, schools in the Lau Group are preparing to reopen today, February 27, 2025. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed the decision after consultations with various divisions and the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), which provided positive recommendations for resuming classes.

The cyclone significantly affected local infrastructure, causing damage to roads, bridges, and crossings that hindered access to schools. However, with conditions now stable, officials believe reopening schools is in the best interest of both students and the surrounding communities. Minister Radrodro expressed his gratitude towards the Lau Group communities for their patience and resilience during this challenging period.

While educational institutions in other regions, such as the Northern Division, Lomaiviti, Western, Central Divisions, and Rotuma, have already resumed classes, the Ministry of Education is actively monitoring the situation across the country. Parents are encouraged to assess local conditions before deciding whether to send their children to school, ensuring their safety remains a top priority.

School heads have been advised to stay in close contact with Management Committees, District, and Divisional Officers for any further updates regarding school operations.

This reopening signifies a crucial step toward recovery and stability in education, showcasing the strength and unity of the affected communities. As families and educational institutions collaborate to navigate the impacts of the cyclone, there is a hopeful outlook for a swift return to normalcy in the educational landscape, paving the way for students and families to rebuild together.
