Schools in the Lau Group are set to reopen following an extended closure triggered by the effects of Tropical Cyclone Rae, which began on February 24. The decision to resume classes comes after a detailed assessment conducted in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office, evaluating the damage to infrastructure—particularly roads, bridges, and crossings—that impeded access to educational facilities.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro expressed his relief at the news, acknowledging the patience and resilience shown by families in the Lau Group during this challenging time. He emphasized the importance of safety and urged parents to assess local conditions before sending their children back to school. The Ministry has been actively monitoring the situation to ensure that schools are safe for operations.

In contrast, schools in the Northern Division, Lomaiviti, Western, and Central Divisions, along with those on Rotuma, have continued to operate as scheduled throughout the cyclone’s aftermath. The Ministry of Education remains vigilant, advising school leaders to maintain open communication with their Management Committees and local authorities, ensuring everyone is informed as recovery efforts progress.

This reopening of schools represents a hopeful step toward recovery and stability in the affected communities. The resilience demonstrated by these communities amid the cyclone’s challenges showcases their strength and determination. As families and educational institutions work together, there is optimism that a swift return to normalcy in the educational sector is within reach, which will ultimately benefit students and their families.

The article highlights the critical nature of community cooperation and preparedness in overcoming natural disasters. With ongoing support and vigilance, there is promise for a successful educational and community recovery.
