In a troubling incident, a school in Nasinu has come under scrutiny after white substances, suspected to be drugs, were found in the teachers’ washroom. This discovery occurred yesterday when a staff member reported the substances, which were wrapped in plastic and located inside the toilet bowl, to her superiors. The matter was subsequently reported to the police.

This incident raises alarms similar to recent occurrences at other educational institutions in Fiji, particularly in Tailevu, where concerns about drug use among students have been vocalized by parents. Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu confirmed that three students from a prominent Tailevu school were questioned regarding alleged drug use on school grounds. Reports indicated that these students were found under the influence of substances, believed to be methamphetamine, and displayed erratic behavior like dancing in dormitories. Parents expressed anxiety over what appears to be a growing trend of drug usage within schools, prompting calls for an investigation into the matter.

The ongoing issues in educational settings suggest a worrying trend that necessitates the immediate attention of school authorities and the government. Parents have reported observing inadequate security measures, noting that vehicles could freely enter school premises at all hours, potentially facilitating the trafficking of illegal substances.

As these incidents unfold, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro is awaiting a report from the Permanent Secretary. The potential for a systematic issue surrounding drug use in schools highlights the urgent need for effective preventive measures and a supportive environment for students.

Raising awareness about the risks associated with drug consumption is critical, as is the importance of enforcing strict supervision within schools. Collaborative efforts between parents, educators, and law enforcement can foster safer educational environments. The communities’ collective response could lead to a brighter future for students and secure their well-being.
