The Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) has made a significant acquisition by purchasing a property from the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) located at Veitari in Lautoka. The strategic investment marks a historic moment for the SCGF, as the property, significant for its heritage, has been tied to the sugar industry since the establishment of the first CSR building and sugar mill in the Western division in 1903.

SCGF Chairman Ahemad Bhamji expressed enthusiasm about the potential of the site, which is positioned conveniently near the port and industrial areas. He outlined preliminary plans to develop a custom-designed commercial property that could provide returns benefiting local sugar cane growers. This aligns with SCGF’s ongoing commitment to supporting the agricultural sector, similar to their recent ventures, including investing in office spaces aimed at reducing financial burdens on farmers.

Commenting on this strategic move, Commissioner Western Apolosi Lewaqai emphasized the importance of having an industry stakeholder take over the property, which he believes will contribute positively to the development of Lautoka and the greater sugar industry. He acknowledged the cooperation of the landowners, signifying a collective effort towards enhancing the local economy.

Moreover, the SCGF aims to attract national and international anchor tenants, including key government agencies and corporations. This initiative reflects a broader commitment within the sugar industry to foster growth and sustainability, despite ongoing challenges faced by producers. The SCGF’s proactive strategy illustrates hope for the future of Fiji’s sugarcane farmers and highlights the importance of collaboration and investment in revitalizing the sector.

As the SCGF moves forward, the focus on developing this site not only demonstrates a commitment to the agricultural community but also offers a promising path for economic enhancement within the region.
