Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum testified in court that his conversation with suspended Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde was not related to any investigations by the Criminal Investigations Department. Instead, he characterized their discussion as a personal exchange concerning their families, specifically their children.

During his testimony, Sayed-Khaiyum clarified that the nature of his conversation with Pryde was misrepresented by the submission of a close-up photo intended to suggest exclusivity in their interaction. He stated that while the image did not adequately depict the presence of other attendees, their conversation involved multiple guests.

Sayed-Khaiyum emphasized that he was offended by assumptions that their dialogue pertained to his ongoing case. He asserted that both he and Pryde maintain high ethical standards and independence.

Responding to allegations regarding Pryde’s superannuation payments being made without requisite approvals, Sayed-Khaiyum argued that such matters fall under the jurisdiction of the Judicial Services Commission. He maintained that he had minimal involvement with these decisions and suggested the court refer to official records for verification.

In his statement, Sayed-Khaiyum noted instances of potential misconduct involving the Minister for Justice and individuals under investigation by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). He mentioned that he had filed a complaint concerning DPP staff, which is currently being addressed by FICAC.

The tribunal overseeing these allegations is considering the recommendation for the removal of Pryde from his position. Notably, it was reported that their discussion lasted for over 45 minutes, occurring during an active investigation of Sayed-Khaiyum, with ongoing scrutiny of Pryde’s payments.

The matter was heard by Justices Anare Tuilevuka, Samuela Qica, and Chaitanya Lakshman and has been adjourned to resume tomorrow at 10 AM.

This ongoing case highlights the complexities of legal and ethical standards in government positions, showcasing the importance of transparency and accountability. The judicial process continues to unfold, and with it, a potential for clarity and resolution for all parties involved.
