The recent inauguration of the Savusavu Mabe Pearl Oyster and Handicraft showroom in Cakaudrove is anticipated to significantly enhance the livelihoods of communities involved in Mabe pearl farming. The establishment was officially launched by the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, in Savusavu.
Minister Bainivalu highlighted that the showroom’s primary objective is to uplift the socioeconomic status of coastal communities engaged in Mabe pearl farming across Cakaudrove. She praised the collaboration between the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the University of Sunshine Coast, the Ministry of Fisheries, and local Mabe pearl farmers, which has been instrumental in this initiative.
She recounted the historical partnership with ACIAR dating back to the 1980s, which initially focused on the Giant Clams at Makogai Island and laid the groundwork for sustainable aquaculture practices in Fiji. Since then, efforts have expanded to include various projects, such as the cultivation of freshwater prawns, demonstrating a shared dedication to fostering sustainable livelihoods and community engagement.
The minister stressed that the new showroom is not just an economic opportunity but also a platform for preserving traditional craftsmanship, empowering local artisans, and stimulating economic activity. The unique Mabe pearl handicrafts are expected to not only generate income but also serve as a source of pride for the community.
Additionally, the showroom will provide training workshops aimed at equipping fisheries officers and community members with skills to transform raw shells into beautiful handicrafts. Bainivalu underscored that this initiative is a representation of a collective ambition towards community empowerment, environmental care, and sustainable development.
Through fostering resilience and creating growth opportunities, this project aspires to enable coastal communities to prosper while protecting Fiji’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
This initiative not only highlights the importance of community support and sustainable practices but also showcases the potential for economic growth in regions reliant on natural resources. It offers hope for the future, suggesting that with continued collaboration and commitment, these communities can build a more sustainable and prosperous tomorrow.
