Savusavu Secondary School athletes SEKOVE Vuniwaqa and Noah Reid are gearing up to qualify for the prestigious Coca-Cola Games at the Easter Athletics Competition held today at the HFC Bank Stadium. Both athletes missed the qualifying times at the Cakaudrove zone competition and are now making one last effort to secure their spots for the Fiji Finals.

The school’s head coach, Nawi Rokodulu, expressed optimism about their chances. “Yes, exactly,” he confirmed when asked if the Easter competition was their last shot at qualification. “This is the competition where we are hoping these two boys can make it. They’ve been working hard, and we’re giving them this chance.”

Despite facing challenges with preparation, such as lacking off-season training due to their athletes being scattered across their villages and financial hurdles during fundraising, Rokodulu emphasized the team’s determination. “With support from our sports team and the community, we managed to get here,” he remarked.

Rokodulu noted that the team traveled with ten athletes, hoping that at least Vuniwaqa and Reid would successfully qualify. Their participation in the Easter Games is crucial, especially as this year’s initiative offers athletes a second chance to compete for a spot in the Fiji Finals, showcasing the FSSAA’s commitment to inclusivity in sports.

As excitement builds around the Easter competition, it presents not just a chance for qualification but also a platform for community support and engagement in athletics. The spirit of perseverance and dedication evident among these young athletes and their coaches indicates a hopeful outlook for the future of sports in Fiji, inspiring many to strive for excellence.
