Fiji Hockey Shines Bright at NZ Heritage Tournament

Fiji Hockey has launched its campaign in the New Zealand Heritage Hockey Tournament with an impressive performance at the North Harbour Hockey Centre in Auckland. In the men’s division, the Kaiviti Heritage team secured a resounding 8-1 victory against NZ Pasifika, while the women narrowly triumphed over the same team with a thrilling 5-4 finish.

Terence Corrie, a player on the men’s team, attributed their success to disciplined gameplay and a commitment to high standards. “We hold high standards to the way we play and discipline to our structure,” he stated, expressing confidence as the team prepares for their upcoming match against the NZ Asians. The emphasis on teamwork and decision-making will be critical as they progress through the tournament.

In preparation for their opening match, the teams engaged in a scrimmage session, which Corrie found beneficial in honing their skills before facing NZ Pasifika. “Good way to start, we had a scrimmage yesterday with the boys from New Zealand, so it was good to get a run on our belt,” he shared.

The support of the Fijian community and the opportunity to represent their country has filled the players with pride. “I’m just proud to represent our heritage and our culture from back home. I’d like to thank all those who made this opportunity possible,” Corrie added, emphasizing the significant cultural impact of their participation.

As anticipation builds, both the men and women’s teams are set to showcase their talents further, with the men’s match scheduled for 2 pm and the women’s match against the NZ Asians at 4 pm. The positive spirit surrounding the teams reflects a hopeful future for hockey in Fiji, inspiring younger generations to engage with the sport. As Fiji’s participation marks a significant step on the international stage, both teams aim to continue this momentum throughout the tournament.
