Blues Make History with Super Rugby Championship Win!

The Blues clinched the championship title with a commanding 36-5 victory over the Waratahs in the inaugural Super Rugby champions final. This monumental match took place amid adverse weather conditions in Auckland due to Cyclone Tam, but the Blues adapted more effectively to the wind and rain, showcasing their prowess on the field.

Captain Maiakawanakaulani Roos expressed immense pride in her team’s performance, highlighting the collective effort and hard work put in throughout the season. “We have such a beautiful group of girls… and to be able to have the opportunity to play against our Tasman sisters was really cool,” she remarked during an interview.

The match featured standout performances, particularly from teenage sensation Braxton Sorensen-McGee, who was instrumental in the Blues’ attack. She scored two tries, including a remarkable solo effort after breaking through Waratahs defenders. The Blues took a significant lead, ending the first half at 19-0, and extended their dominance in the second half with additional tries from Elizabith Moimoi and Cheyenne Tuli-Fale.

Despite the loss, Waratahs captain Emily Chancellor acknowledged the honor of participating in such a historic match and cited the challenging conditions that impacted their performance. As the game concluded, Roos expressed a desire for further support and resources for women’s rugby, emphasizing the need for more competitive matches against Australian teams.

This victory for the Blues symbolizes not just a moment of triumph but reflects the growing strength of women’s rugby in the region, inspiring future generations and enhancing the sport’s visibility. The collaborative spirit and dedication exhibited by both teams serve as a promising foundation for the future of women’s rugby in the Super Rugby landscape.
