Authorities in Savusavu are issuing urgent warnings about unlicensed individuals masquerading as real estate agents, a trend that is jeopardizing property transactions and exploiting potential buyers. Reports indicate that even taxi drivers and locals are becoming involved in illegal property sales, further complicating the integrity of the real estate market.
Shivani Dutt, Compliance Officer for the Real Estate Licensing Board (REALB), highlighted the alarming statistic that only three licensed agents are operating in the area amidst a backdrop of extensive illicit activity. Dutt emphasized the seriousness of dealing with unlicensed agents, stating, “If you are dealing with a bogus agent, the consequences will be dealt with by you only, because you are dealing with a person who is not registered with us. Therefore, if any transaction goes wrong, we won’t be able to locate them and hold them accountable.”
Licensed real estate agent Aren Nunnik also expressed concern, noting that many tourists unfamiliar with Fiji’s property laws are at risk. He recounts instances where visitors have unknowingly handed over money to unlicensed locals posing as agents, only to discover later that the properties in question were not for sale or that the agents had no legitimate credentials.
The situation poses a significant risk not only to individual buyers but also threatens Fiji’s reputation as a safe and trustworthy destination for investment and retirement. With Savusavu being a favored spot for foreign buyers, continued inaction against these bogus agents could have lasting ramifications on the local economy and tourism sector. The need for vigilance and adherence to proper licensing is more crucial than ever to ensure that both buyers and the real estate market remain protected.
