Motuopua’a Henny Papalii, the Member of Parliament representing Vaisigano No.2, has officially resigned from his position to join the Fa’atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) Party. This significant move, which took place on Tuesday, paves the way for a by-election that Papalii intends to contest under the FAST banner.

In a heartfelt message to the parliament, Papalii expressed his commitment to following the wishes of his constituents. “I am your servant that you voted for; prayers and support are needed from you as I am ready to leave this seat and go back to a by-election as the law says,” he stated, emphasizing his dedication to serving the people.

He further appealed for understanding, saying, “I apologise if there is any lapse during these few weeks, I’ve been your MP. Please forgive me.” Papalii highlighted the importance of obeying both the law and his constituents, concluding with a blessing for the Parliament of Samoa.

Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt acknowledged Papalii’s vision and offered best wishes as he prepares to return to the polls. He remarked on the challenges of such a transition, stating, “You cannot leave just like that, it’s not easy.” The Prime Minister noted that the decision to join the government was in line with justice as agreed upon by the constituency.

The Speaker of Parliament, Auapa’au Mulipola Aloitafua, also recognized Papalii’s contributions, wishing him luck on his future endeavors.

Motuopua’a was voted into parliament during the general election held last August, marking his first term. His recent inauguration into the FAST Party occurred last Saturday and was celebrated by his constituency members who presented their support to the party. This transition is not only a pivotal moment for Papalii but also a chance for the community to reassert their vision for representation.
