A significant initiative to reduce carbon emissions from shipping activities in the Pacific was officially launched in Suva, Fiji, on Friday. The program, named “Voyage to Zero,” aims to assist freight customers in decreasing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This innovative approach was introduced aboard the MV Apia Chief by Mosese Bulitavu, the Minister for Environment and Climate Change.

“Voyage to Zero” promotes carbon insetting via the use of second-generation biofuels, allowing freight customers to reap the benefits of GHG reductions achieved across Swire Shipping’s fleet. Swire Shipping’s CEO, Jeremy Sutton, emphasized the company’s dedication to supporting the maritime industry’s transition towards net-zero emissions. He noted that while Pacific Island nations contribute minimally to global emissions, they are exceptionally vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.

This program enables customers to purchase and claim GHG savings from voyages that use biofuels, even if their cargo is transported on different vessels. The emissions savings are calculated through a comparison with traditional fossil fuels, relying on independently verified data for accuracy.

In April 2025, Swire Shipping made strides by converting three of its vessels serving the South Pacific to B24 second-generation biofuel blends, a move that aligns with its broader sustainability goals. This transition underscores the company’s commitment to fostering environmental responsibility within the maritime sector.

The initiative has garnered support from Fiji’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, highlighting the proactive approach needed from the shipping industry to combat climate challenges. It reflects ongoing efforts to introduce greener fuels in the region, collaborating with Pacific Island partners to pave the way for a sustainable and resilient future.

This advancement in sustainable shipping practices conveys a hopeful message about the collective efforts being made to address climate change and promote environmental stewardship in vulnerable regions, setting a benchmark for global maritime operations. The “Voyage to Zero” initiative symbolizes a significant step towards a cleaner, greener future for the Pacific and demonstrates how collaboration can lead to tangible environmental benefits.
