The Minister for Education, Mr. Aseri Radrodro, has declared that all schools in the Lau Group, Lomaiviti, and Vanua Levu will be closed on Monday, February 24, due to the impending impact of Tropical Depression TD09F. This decision was made in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) to prioritize the safety of students and staff amid forecasts of strong winds and heavy rain.

As of 3 AM today, Tropical Depression TD09F was situated around 350 km northeast of Cikobia and is expected to gain strength as it approaches Fiji from the north. Local residents have been advised to prepare for adverse weather conditions, including possible flooding and strong currents.

For schools not directly impacted by the storm, classes will continue as scheduled; however, parents are encouraged to make thoughtful decisions regarding their children’s attendance, particularly those living in areas vulnerable to flooding.

In light of these events, the Ministry of Education stresses the importance of keeping all parties informed and will issue updates through press releases and official channels. School administrators have been urged to maintain open lines of communication with their School Management Committees and local authorities to ensure everyone stays informed.

This situation highlights the critical role of community readiness and solidarity during extreme weather events. By being proactive and supporting one another, families can effectively navigate the challenges posed by such natural occurrences.

While the threat from Tropical Depression TD09F remains, there is optimism that through collaborative efforts and timely communication, the safety and well-being of students and their families can be secured. Local authorities are keenly monitoring developments and are committed to providing continuous updates to keep the community safe and informed.
