A local tour operator at Biausevu Waterfalls in Sigatoka has expressed concerns about visitor safety during adverse weather conditions, following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a five-year-old tourist. Petero Finau, owner of Biausevu Waterfall Tour, spoke out after the young girl was reportedly swept away by strong currents while swimming with her family.
Mr. Finau shared that his tour operations had paused for the holidays when he was informed about the tragic drowning. He emphasized the importance of safety, noting that local operators are generally conscious of the risks associated with poor weather. “It is sad because most of us are aware that when the weather is bad, we don’t let anyone go to the waterfall, especially tourists,” he stated.
He mentioned that during adverse conditions, he secures his horses and refrains from conducting tours to ensure the safety of his guests. Finau expressed his belief that the waterfall’s entry fee may have led to the assumption that people were permitted to enter the water, despite the dangerous weather.
The young girl, who was reportedly with family members at the time of the incident, was found deceased near the waterfall on Tuesday morning and later transported to the Sigatoka Hospital. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning are ongoing.
Despite reaching out to Tourism Fiji and the Minister for Tourism for comments, no responses had been received at the time. The community is grappling with this loss, highlighting the urgent need for heightened safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
