In Sabeto Village, authorities are tightening regulations in response to increasing alcohol consumption and substance abuse among the youth. Headman Joseva Naikovea announced that disciplinary measures would be enforced for those found violating village rules, particularly regarding alcohol consumption on Sundays.

Naikovea emphasized the need for community action, stating that a traditional form of discipline known as moku vakavanua would be implemented for those who disregard the laws established by the vanua o Betoraurau. He noted that while the village has a youth group, its effectiveness has been hampered by some members engaging in drug use and excessive kava drinking.

“We have seen individuals whose lives are significantly affected by their dependence on kava,” Naikovea explained. “If anyone is caught with drugs, we take immediate action by warning them and involving the police if necessary.”

The village leadership is committed to maintaining a safe environment for children and youth, and they continue to uphold strict regulations put in place last year. These rules include restrictions on movement after dark, with children and students prohibited from being outside the village past 9 P.M. Additionally, all entrances to the village are to be securely closed by 10 P.M.

The proactive measures reflect a community striving to protect its younger members and foster a healthier environment, signaling a hopeful commitment to addressing behavioral issues effectively. By reinforcing these regulations, the village leaders aim to guide the youth towards more positive choices and a brighter future.
