The Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, along with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, has confirmed that the previously contaminated section of the upper Sabeto River is now safe for regular use. This announcement follows an incident on May 22 involving a discharge from Lion One Metals mining company, which had contaminated the waterway.

Lion One Metals has taken full responsibility for the discharge, which led to significant local concerns, including the mortality of aquatic life. The company is now implementing essential improvements such as building a new pre-treatment facility, enhancing monitoring systems, and engaging directly with local communities to provide reassurance and transparency.

While preliminary tests indicate that water quality has returned to safe levels, authorities have advised that treated water should still not be consumed due to nearby livestock activity. To ensure compliance with environmental standards, the Mineral Resources Department has suspended all wastewater discharges from the mining operations until full compliance is demonstrated.

This situation has drawn parallels to previous incidents involving Lion One, where community concerns about environmental safety were significant. Past reports highlighted the need for effective communication and action between the mining company and local populations, emphasizing the essential role that the Sabeto River plays in the daily lives of residents.

Community leaders have voiced their hopes that the current situation could lead to strengthened regulations and collaborative efforts to safeguard local resources. The optimism surrounding enhanced environmental stewardship highlights the potential for a productive relationship between Lion One and the local communities. This cooperative spirit may be vital in addressing concerns, improving safety, and ensuring responsible mining operations in the future.

The continued vigilance and proactive actions of both the government and local population signal a promising path forward for ecological health and community well-being in the region.
