The Tui Sabeto Ratu Viliame Mataitoga and the vanua o Betoraurau are leading a proactive initiative against drug and substance abuse with the implementation of strict regulations across their seven districts. This new initiative took effect on January 22, prohibiting the consumption of alcohol, smoking, and any substance abuse for a duration of five months.
Set forth by Ratu Viliame and his seven tribal chiefs, this regulation aims to protect the well-being of local youths aged 18 to 35. Joseva Naikovea, headman of Sabeto Village, explained that the effort is part of a broader strategy to support and strengthen young people in the community, particularly as they navigate challenging times.
Naikovea noted that the five villages participating in this initiative include Koroyaca, Narokorokoyawa, Natalau, Naboutini, and Korobebe. The initiative encourages around 700 community members to embrace this traditional Fijian moratorium as a form of discipline rather than punishment, emphasizing the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle that prioritizes family and respect for elders.
As the restrictions began, Naikovea observed positive changes in the community, highlighting the need for all community members to focus on their jobs, care for their loved ones, and maintain respect within the community. He stated, “The important thing about this restriction is that they should be mindful of their jobs, love and care for their parents and families, and respect the elders in our community.”
This year has been designated as a time of restoration and blessings for the youth of Sabeto, with plans for job opportunities—both locally in the hospitality sector and potentially abroad—reinforcing the community’s commitment to nurturing its younger generations. Naikovea expressed gratitude to the vanua for establishing these restrictions, recognizing their potential for fostering a healthier, more productive future for the community.
