Russia has declared its readiness to provide Ukraine with a draft document detailing conditions for a long-term peace agreement once a current prisoner exchange is concluded, according to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Lavrov reiterated Russia’s commitment to pursuing a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict, which has lasted more than three years.
In his remarks posted on the ministry’s website, Lavrov also accused Ukraine of conducting a series of drone strikes on Russian targets that have resulted in casualties and disruptions in air traffic. He suggested that European nations encouraged these actions to hinder peace negotiations led by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
On Friday, Russia and Ukraine successfully executed a prisoner swap, releasing 390 detainees from both sides. This exchange was facilitated by discussions held between officials from both countries in Turkey. Lavrov emphasized that as soon as the prisoner exchange is completed, Russia will present Ukraine with a draft outlining the conditions necessary for a reliable and sustained peace agreement.
“We are committed to a peace settlement and remain open to talks,” Lavrov stated, asserting that Russia is actively working on the second part of the agreement reached in Istanbul, which involves drafting a comprehensive document addressing the long-term resolution of the conflict.
The recent progress in prisoner exchanges highlights the potential for diplomatic engagement amid the ongoing hostilities. Ukraine’s situation remains complicated by the involvement of North Korean troops alongside Russian forces, emphasizing the urgent need for a united international front to support peace efforts and uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Hope remains that through continued dialogue and negotiation, there is a pathway to a more stable and peaceful future for both nations, calling for efforts to transform these cautious steps into a lasting resolution that respects the rights and security of all countries involved.
