Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, is setting his sights on being selected for another leg of the HSBC SVNS series in 2025. He hopes to join head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-member squad for one of the tournaments next year. Kabu made his series debut at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, following his earlier performances in the Oceania and Pacific Games.
Reflecting on his journey, Kabu expressed that being included in the wider squad is already a significant accomplishment. “It’s every young rugby player’s dream to play among the best in the national team, and I hope for another opportunity in one of the legs,” he remarked. Alongside his goal for national representation, he aspires to secure an overseas rugby contract.
Starting his rugby career with the Natakali Sharks in Tailevu, Kabu later progressed to play for Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and the Police Blues sevens team. He credits the support and guidance from established players such as Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu as instrumental in his development. Kabu has also admired assistant coach Viliame Satala growing up and feels fortunate to have received mentorship from him.
“I have learned a lot about discipline from these seasoned players, and I aim to follow in their footsteps to inspire the next generation,” he stated.
The national sevens squad resumed their Daily Training Exercises after a Christmas break and will enter training camp next week. Kolinisau is set to select a team for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens event taking place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, followed by the Perth Sevens scheduled for January 24-26.
Kabu’s determination and commitment to rugby highlight not only his aspirations but also the dedication required to excel in the sport. His journey reflects the spirit of many athletes striving to reach their highest potential, and with continued hard work and support, he stands a good chance of achieving his goals in the coming season.
This narrative brings hope to aspiring athletes, demonstrating that with perseverance and the right mentorship, dreams can become a reality.
