Rupeni Kabu Sets Sights on HSBC Sevens Glory for 2025

Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being selected for another leg of the HSBC SVNS series in 2025. The athlete hopes to secure a place in the 13-man squad led by head coach Osea Kolinisau in one of next year’s tournaments. Kabu made his series debut at the 2023 Dubai sevens, having previously competed in the Oceania and Pacific Games.

Expressing his commitment to the sport, Kabu acknowledges the sacrifices and hard work required to be part of the extended squad. He stated, “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself. It’s every young rugby player’s dream to be here – to play among the best players on the national side, and I hope I get another chance in one of the legs.” Alongside his goal of representing Fiji in the series, Kabu aims to secure an overseas contract in the rugby scene.

Kabu’s rugby journey began with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, before playing for Northland in the Vodafone Vanua championship and the Police Blues sevens side. He expressed gratitude for the support and mentorship he has received from seasoned players like Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, as well as assistant coach Viliame Satala, whom he admires. Kabu mentioned that he has learned invaluable lessons about discipline and is eager to inspire the next generation of rugby players by following in their footsteps.

The national sevens squad is currently focused on their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) after the Christmas break and will enter a training camp next week. Kolinisau is preparing the team for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, followed by the Perth Sevens from January 24-26.

Kabu’s determination and commitment to his goals, along with the support he receives from experienced players, paint a hopeful picture for his future in rugby. His journey is a testament to the perseverance required to succeed in sports and the importance of mentorship in nurturing upcoming talent.
