Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights firmly on being selected for another HSBC SVNS series leg, targeting opportunities in 2025. He aims to secure a position in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-member squad for upcoming tournaments next year.
Kabu’s last appearance on the world stage was during the 2023 Dubai Sevens, marking not only a significant milestone as his series debut but also following a strong performance in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier in the same year. Reflecting on his journey, Kabu emphasized the immense dedication and hard work required to earn a spot in the extended squad, viewing this as a major achievement.
“Being in the wider squad is a remarkable accomplishment,” Kabu remarked. He expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to play among the nation’s top athletes, sharing a hopeful sentiment regarding his potential inclusion in future competitions. Alongside this goal, Kabu also aims to secure an overseas rugby contract.
His rugby career began with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, before he progressed to play for Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and the Police Blues Sevens side. Grateful for the mentorship from seasoned players like Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, Kabu has absorbed valuable lessons on discipline and commitment, aspiring to inspire future generations of rugby players.
The national sevens squad resumed their daily training exercises following a Christmas break and will enter camp next week. Coach Kolinisau plans to reveal his selection for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, taking place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. This will be a stepping stone before naming the squad for the Perth Sevens scheduled for January 24-26.
This article showcases Kabu’s determination and the support system within the rugby community, highlighting the pathways available for athletes to pursue their dreams. As the national team embarks on its training, there is a collective hope and excitement for what lies ahead in the coming tournaments.
