The Fiji Bitter Nacula, Yasawa 7s tournament transcends traditional sporting events by fostering education and supporting the youth of the Yasawa Islands. This year, the organizers are set to donate $10,000 to Ratu Meli Primary School and Yasawa North Secondary School during a ceremony at Churchill Park.
Mosese Susu, the tournament coordinator, announced that the funds would be presented to the heads of both schools and Turaga Na Tui Drola, Ratu Manasa Naikasowalu. The primary aim is to enhance school facilities and create prospects for promising young athletes. Over the prior two years, the donations have already led to significant improvements, including classroom repairs, the construction of teachers’ quarters, and providing food rations for students.
This year’s funding will be delivered publicly to ensure transparency and accountability, reflecting the tournament’s motto: “Breeding Champions from Grassroots to Greatness.” Susu emphasized the initiative’s commitment to steering youth away from drugs and crime by leveraging sports as a means to discover and nurture local talent.
“Our objective is to support youth development from the grassroots up and create pathways for them to advance to club, provincial, and potentially national teams like the Fijian Drua,” he added.
The event has garnered substantial support from various co-sponsors, including Vodafone, which backs the women’s division, and Kasabias, which sponsors the U21 category. Additional support has come from South Seas and Blue Lagoon for referees, Vomo Island Resort for ambulance services, and Esthers Sea Food for catering officials. Tanoa Waterfront and Lautoka Hotel also contribute to the cause.
Susu encouraged fans to attend in large numbers, highlighting that the entry fees directly benefit schools and the community at large. “Every ticket purchased contributes to a brighter future for our children and our sports,” he stated.
